As protests erupt in the American city of St. Louis over the acquittal of a white policeman who killed a black man, English pop star Ed Sheeran and Irish band U2 have been forced to cancel their concerts billed to held in that city.
Police in that city say they do not have enough resources to provide security at the concert venues as they are stretched thin trying to quell riots across town.
‘We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size. We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity’ said U2’s statement.
Ed Sheeran representatives told local news outlets that he was ‘saddened by the events and was looking forward to returning to St Louis.’
On Friday, former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley was found not guilty in the murder of Anthony Lamar Smith, an African-American in 2015, leading to protests and unrest around the city.
